RESPONSIBLE TOURISM AT THE HEART OF SARAWAK RAINFOREST WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL FROM 23RD TO 25TH JUNE 2023 ATTRACTING VISITORS WORLD OVER
KUCHING, 3rd MAY 2023 – Sarawak’s world-renowned Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) has received an encouraging response from Malaysians and festival enthusiasts around the globe as Sarawak continues to advocate sustainable practices for the 26th Edition of the RWMF.
Proactive measures have been taken by Sarawak towards creating and implementing a sustainable, eco-friendly festival, and together with the State’s tourism players, the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) will continue to embark on activities which advocate sustainability including banning of single use plastics, encouraging upcycling of used materials and exploring innovative solutions to waste management.
Festival-goers will also experience ease of travelling to the festival venue through the provision of shuttle buses from Kuching City to the event venue, Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) on an hourly basis from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm and from SCV to Kuching City hourly, from 12.30 pm to 5.30pm and continuing from 9.00 pm to 1.00 am, based on scheduled trips.
The provision of these shuttle buses are in line with Sarawak’s aim to avoid congestion and alleviate carbon emission, for energy conservation and environmental education, encouraging participation in greening initiatives – all towards making Responsible Tourism the ‘norm’ and the RWMF as a key platform for Sarawak to push sustainability and ecotourism for the next generation of music lovers.
The 26th Edition of RWMF, which targeted 20,000 visitors, received an encouraging response world-over, with its ‘Early Birds’ tickets being sold out on 29th April. Festival enthusiasts will now be able to purchase the festival’s ‘Pre-Sale Tickets’ on Klook Ticketing Platform at lower prices, compared to ‘Door Sale’ Prices at the Venue during the Festival.
The ‘Pre-sale’ tickets have now been made available on Klook ticketing platform across a range of categories: Adult 1-Day Pass Fri/Sun (RM230), Adult 1-Day Pass Sat (RM260), Adult 2-Day Pass Fri + Sat / Sat + Sun (RM440), Adult 3-Day Pass (RM590), and Child 1-Day Pass Fri/Sat/Sun (RM80) – under a limited-period offer.
This year’s RWMF will feature a total of 199 musicians from 12 countries in a rainforest setting at the foot of Mount Santubong. RWMF’s international line-up will feature a diverse range of music genres, including Grammy Awards winner, Gipsy Kings featuring Tonino Baliardo from France of such hits as ‘Djobi Djoba’ and ‘Bamboleo’ set to enthral visitors with their pop-oriented music, distantly derived from traditional flamenco and rumba genres.
Other international performers include Big Mountain from Jamaica and the USA best known for their hit song ‘Baby I Love Your Way’, Safi Theatre from Tanzania, Rastak from Iran, Fasylive from Maldives, Afriquoi from the United Kingdom, Chatusram from India, Rizal Hadi & Folk from Indonesia and Ethno Thai Fusion Sound Band from Thailand. The line-up will also include performers from Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
RWMF2023 will also highlight Malaysian local talents from East and West Malaysia, which include Zee Avi, Suk Binie, Aseana Percussion Unit, Nadir, Steve Thornton & Afroasia, Sada Borneo, Tuku Kame, Nading Rhapsody, Geng Wak Long, Buloh Bekocak, At Adau, Meruked, and Orang Orang Drum Theatre.
Themed ‘Reflections’, RWMF 2023 offers festival-goers an opportunity to not only engage with world music and cultural traditions, but also to connect with and embrace its underlying themes and values. It is also a time to reflect on the connection with nature and embrace diverse musical styles to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the world around.
