New Sarawak Museum, Largest in Malaysia
The “new look” Sarawak Museum, the largest in Malaysia and second largest in Southeast Asia, will be opened to the public by the end of next year, the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said.
The project also includes the conservation of the historic Old Sarawak Museum building built in 1891, which is a landmark in its own right.
The world-class museum, with 6,000 square metres of interactive and engaging exhibition, has a well-curated selection of unique artefacts and specimens.
“It will be ready to take visitors on an interactive journey showcasing Sarawak’s history and life of the communities in the State,” said the Minister.
“The cavernous collection and storage space complement the State-of-the-Art research facilities that will keep the vast array of state-owned priceless museum collections safely preserved for future generations to enjoy” he said at the handing over of the site
Its dedicated spaces support the museum’s ambition towards becoming the leading research institute on the material culture of Borneo.
The new museum project was completed in May this year at a total cost of RM308 million and is equipped with digital facilities and incorporated with technologies to enhance visitors’ experience.
