Miri City Christmas Parade 2018

The Miri Christmas Parade will take place on December 8 this year and is expected to bring more than 45,000 people together to witness and participate in the festive season.

Held every second Sunday of December, the parade has become a staple in the Miri calendar for both visitors and locals,  watching the bright lights, creative costumes and music as the marchers make their way through the city.

This year will be the 11th edition of this event in Miri.

Sarawak Borneo Cross Country Motorcycle Rally 2018

November 24, 2018 – December 5, 2018

The Sarawak Borneo Cross Country Motorcycle Rally will take place on November 24 to December 5, a 12-day 11-night excursion for 250cc engines with some 200 riders from Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia participating .

Riders will start off in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, before riding through Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and Kuching in Sarawak, and moving to  Pontianak and Singkawang in Indonesia and ending in back Kuching.

Miri Indoor Weekend Market

A Sunday weekend market has started in Miri at Coco Cabana from 12.00pm to 7.00 pm on November 18, December 6 and 16.

The weekend market seeks to encourage local entrepreneurs and craftspeople to exhibit and sell, with wares such as antique collections, DIY accessories, arts and crafts, beauty products, apparel and homemade food offered for sale.

It makes  an interesting outing for locals as well as tourists, who can enjoy the seaside beauty of the Coco Cabana area, featuring  the iconic Seahorse lighthouse and  a  ‘hang out’ at the Wharf with the added appeal of the market.

Kuching chosen for the 10th Asian Bird Fair

Kuching has been chosen to host the 10th Asian Bird Fair 2019,

This is an annual event created to highlight the different bird species in Asia and to promote the protection of birds and their habitats, encourage bird watching and other ecotourism activities.

Sarawak has the most number of Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Malaysia, with over 600,000 hectares of totally protected areas and a great portion of the 650 endemic Bornean bird species are found here.

Meanwhile, Sarawak delegates comprising representatives from the Sarawak Tourism Board, Sarawak Convention Bureau and the Kuching Bird Watching Club will  attend the 9th Asian Bird Fair to be held in Chiayi, Taiwan  on November 16-20.

“Visit Sarawak Campaign” Short Video Competitions

The Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), in collaboration with Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) is organizing an “Indie Video Competition” based on the theme “Sarawak, More to Discover.” 

The competition, with a submission of less than 60 seconds of short video clips of Sarawak, is open to all, especially Sarawakians, giving local amateur video-makers a chance to show the world that there is so much more to see, do, eat, and to experience in Sarawak.

Entries will close on December 7, with the winners being announced on December 10.

The panel of independent judges appointed by STF & STB, include professional videographers, influencers and other tourism related industry partners, will select the winning video based on criteria like creativity and originality, accuracy of information, effectiveness of reaching the target audience and overall quality of the video.

The grand winner of this contest will take home a grand cash  prize of RM 10,000.00 for the Indie video category  and RM1,500.00 for the  Instagram video.

Miri Country Music Festival

Taking place at Coco Cabana in Miri, the fifth edition of the Miri Country Music Festival (MCMF) will be staged on November 24.

Featuring a line-up of local and out of Malaysia country musicians, it aims to draw in country music lovers from all walks of life to the festival.

Activities at the festival include a bazaar offering various stalls selling wide varieties of food, games and souvenir items.

Tickets are priced at RM30 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 years old and below.

Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge 2018

The Siol International Mountain Bike Challenge (SIMBC) will take place from November 9 to 11 in Kuching.

It is also in the 7th of the nine legs in the Asia Mountain Bike Series (AMS), which is held across several Asian countries such as Japan, Philippines, Indonesia and Brunei.

The SIMBC is divided into 10 Categories; Cross Country Challenge (XCO) Men’s Elite (19 years above), XCO Women’s Elite (19 years above), UCI Men’s Junior World Series (17 and 18 years old), UCI Women’s Junior World Series (17 and 18 years old), Men’s Master A (30 years above), Men’s Master B (30 years above), Sarawak Closed, Downhill (DH) Men’s Elite (17 years above), DH Women’s Elite (17 years above) and DH Men’s Master (30 years above).

An additional challenge is the Team Relay (XCR) category where the competitors will be vying for the Mayor’s Trophy.


Borneo Talent Awards

From November 23 to 24, the talented artistes of Sibu town will compete to identify the most talented performer around town.

Open to both Malaysians and foreigners with no age limit, this talent competition showcases an array of talent, from singing, dancing, acrobatics, pantomimes and many other performing arts both traditional and modern.

This event is organised by the Sibu Municipal Council with the intent to explore and nurture the local talent of the local Sibu community.


Sarawak Crafts Festival

The Sarawak Craft Festival has brought 100 craft entrepreneurs from throughout the country to the banks of the Sarawak River, from October 26 to November 4.

There are 82 entrepreneurs participating from Sarawak, in addition to eight participants from Sabah, one from Terengganu, three from Kelantan, two from Selangor, one from Melaka, one from Perak and three from Negeri Sembilan.

This festival is being held in conjunction with the Kuching Waterfront Festival 2018, and coincides with the International Dragon Boat Race (October 26-28) and the Sarawak Regatta (November 2-4), which is also being held at the Kuching Waterfront.

Some of the wares on sale include textiles, jungle produce, ceramics, beadwork, accessories, metals and various other crafts.

The Sarawak Craft Festival aims to encourage Malaysians, especially the youth, to appreciate and use locally-made craft products as part of their lifestyle.

RWMF at WOMEX in Spain

Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) participated in the 24th edition of Womex – The World Music Expo at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain from Oct 24–28.

With such a positive enquiries from international bands and artistes, it comes as no surprise that Sarawak can become a key market to music lovers all over the world”, said STB Events and Corporate Relations director Angelina Bateman.

Attending the event with the RWMF organising staff were award-winning Sarawak band and two-time RWMF star group, Nading Rhapsody, who are known for their blend of traditional and contemporary Sarawak music.

Represented by Royston Kulleh and Azhfar Raimi, Nading Rhapsody hoped to gain as much international  experience as possible from this renowned world music expo.

“Attending Womex is a big step for us and an opportunity to promote the unique music from Sarawak,” said Royston Kulleh. He and Azhfar Raimi represented Nading Rhapsody at the expo.

RWMF has garnered international recognition in the 21 years it has been held, with over 20,000 festival goers attending in 2018

The Sarawak Tourism Board believes in giving Sarawakian music artistes opportunities to perform at an international level as RWMF continues to bring in global music audience, as well as facilitating their presence in the international world music scene.

“STB provides an avenue for representatives to attend this international event with us and promote themselves on the international music scene, in the hope that they would be able to perform on  their own at international events outside Malaysia and prove that Sarawak has something unique to offer in terms of music and culture,” said Angelina Bateman, STB Director of Events and Corporate Services, as well as organising director of the RWMF.
