Kuching Heritage Race 2018

The third edition of the Kuching Heritage Race will be held on January 27 with new routes, highlighting more of the city’s amazing heritage and culture.

The theme for this year event is “Culture Meets Nature,” and will include teams of two to six people ‘racing’ through Kuching to test their knowledge on the city’s history, spanning the different eras of Sarawak and Kuching’s development.

The first Kuching Heritage Race in 2016 had 42 teams and 156 participants from around the world, and raised RM20,000 to provide customized wheelchairs for handicapped children.

Grit & Grace: The Grandeur of Monochrome Malaysia

 The Grit & Grace: The Grandeur of Monochrome Malaysia photo project is currently being held at the Old Courthouse in Kuching on January 6 to 21, from 10am to 10pm.

The photo project by photojournalist SC Shekarwith its 330-page photobook compilation showcases the beauty of Malaysian landscapes and cultures of the people, all in black and white.

The exhibition partnering with Grab offers discounted rides to the exhibition, with a promo code GRITGRACEKCH offering an RM8.00 discount.

First Cruise of 2018 Berths in Kuching

The Cruise Ship ‘Star Legend’ of Windstar Cruise was the first cruise ship to dock in Kuching this year, at Sim Kheng Hong Port on January 8 at 8.45am.

194 passengers, predominantly from Europe and the United States, disembarked from the Cruise to visit Bako National Park, Sarawak Cultural Village and experience a tour around the Cat City.                                                                  

This is the maiden voyage by Windstar Cruises, and is the first cruise of nine scheduled to berth at Sarawak’s harbours.

Visit Miri Year 2018, “Discover Miri, Uniquely Borneo”

The Visit Miri Year 2018 (VMY2018) logo and tagline “Discover Miri, Uniquely Borneo” were unveiled at the Miri Marriot Resort and Spa on November 30th last year.

In addition to the tagline, Miri City Council announced their intention to utilise modern digital platform such as social media, search engine optimisation, mobile apps, online hotel platforms and online digital marketing to promote the VMY2018.

Following the unveiling of the VMY 2018 logo, the new version of Miri App v1.1.which features information on tourist attractions, eateries, accommodation, transportation and other useful visitors’ information was released. Miri will see roughly 30 new events next year including the opening of the Miri Handicraft Centre, 40th anniversary celebration of Malaysia Dragon Temple Krokop 5, the International Conference on Sustainable Building Asia, Sarawak Native Festival, South East Asia Poet Convention and a pet expo.

The signature events of Miri will continue, with dates set for the Borneo Jazz Festival, Miri Country Music Fest, AfroLatin Conference, Miri Colours Rush Run, Miri International Marathon Run and Bazaar Gong Xi.


Sarawak Tourism Board Focus on Digital Marketing

Sarawak Tourism Board is prepared to be the first agency to bring the Tourism sector into the digital economy.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of STB, Mary Wan Mering said starting this year, STB would beimplementing marketing strategies leveraging on Information Technology (IT) and the internet to the fullest.

The strategies are in line with the State Government’s new direction into the digital economy.

Working hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, STB plans to help local tourism partners moving their products and services online, particularly within rural longhouse homestay owners.

New Permanent Secretary of MTACYS

Hii Chang Keehas taken his new postas the new permanent secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports (MTACYS) as of January 2018.

Previously serving as the Resident of Sibu Division, Hii promised to work closely with MTACYS Minister, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in every aspect, pointing out the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Perak as one of the points of focus.

He joined the civil service in 1992 and has served as the Sibu Municipal Council Secretary before taking the Resident SibuDivision post.

Taking Hii’s place as the new Sibu Resident is Charles Siaw, a former Industry and Investment Promotion division head for the Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development.
